Minnesota Paid Leave Act takes effect, covering employers of all sizes

Minnesota's Paid Leave Act took effect January 1, 2026, providing paid family and medical leave with job protection to nearly all Minnesota employees. Unlike many state programs, it applies to Minnesota employers regardless of size (excluding only federal and tribal entities), funded through payroll premiums shared between employers and workers.

Why this matters for founders

Even one-person-plus startups with Minnesota staff must remit premiums and honor leave requests—set up payroll withholding and a written leave policy now to stay compliant.
