NZ R&D Career Grant reopens: up to NZ$35k to hire a PhD or Masters grad

New Zealand's R&D Career Grant, administered by MBIE Innovation Services, reopened for applications at 9am on Monday 31 August 2026. It funds six months of full-time salary (minimum 30 hours/week) for a recent graduate: up to NZ$30,000 plus GST for a Master's graduate and up to NZ$35,000 plus GST for a PhD graduate. Applications close once all funding is allocated.

Why this matters for founders

An NZ-incorporated startup running an active R&D programme can apply now to bring on a recent STEM/design/business graduate and offset six months of their salary, but should apply early since the round closes when funding runs out.
