Why this matters
Customers use photos to answer one question: is this business real and good? Stock photos of smiling models answer neither. Real photos of you, your work, and your space are the cheapest trust-builder you have.
What "done" looks like
- Every core page uses real photos: you, your team, your work, your space
- Stock imagery is gone or reduced to background decoration
- Photos are bright, uncluttered, and shot in natural light
- Files are compressed so pages still load fast on a phone
How to do it
- List the shots you need. Owner portrait, storefront or workspace, work in progress, finished results, happy-customer moments (with permission).
- Shoot in daylight. Near a window or outside, phone camera is fine; wipe the lens, steady your hands, take many and keep few.
- Capture before-and-after pairs if your work transforms anything — they sell harder than any adjective.
- Replace every stock photo on Home, Services, and About with a real one.
- Compress before uploading so large images don't slow mobile pages; most builders resize automatically, but check.
- Refresh quarterly. New jobs, new seasons, new photos.
Common mistakes
- Stock handshake photos that scream "template site"
- Dark, cluttered shots that make good work look bad
- Uploading straight from the camera and wondering why pages crawl
Real-world examples
- Airbnb's founders famously photographed New York hosts' apartments themselves in 2010; professionally shot listings earned dramatically more bookings, and the effort became Airbnb's documented professional photography program.
- Trades that post before-and-after galleries of real jobs give buyers evidence no written claim can match — a pattern visible across cleaning, landscaping, detailing, and renovation businesses.
From a founder's point of view
A slightly imperfect real photo beats a flawless fake one, because the customer is buying the real thing. Photos are marketing the founder already owns — the work just has to be shown.
Rule of thumb
If a photo could appear on a competitor's site without anyone noticing, it isn't selling you. Replace it.
