19 states raised minimum wage on Jan 1, 2026, led by Hawaii's $2 jump

Nineteen states increased their minimum wage rates effective January 1, 2026, with Hawaii posting the largest jump — up $2 to $16/hour. New York rose to $17 downstate and $16 for the rest of the state, and California's statewide floor climbed to $16.90. For the first time, more workers live in $15+ states than in federal-minimum ($7.25) states.

Why this matters for founders

Founders with hourly staff should recheck payroll, offer letters and unit economics against their state's 2026 floor now, since local city/county minimums often stack even higher on top of the state rate.
