50+ new state workplace laws hit in 2026: 19+ minimum-wage hikes, new paid leave

More than 50 new state workplace laws took effect around January 1, 2026, including minimum-wage increases in at least 19 states and newly launched paid family and medical leave programs. Minnesota's Paid Leave (up to 20 weeks) and Delaware's Healthy Delaware Families Act (up to 12 weeks for employers with 10+ staff) both began Jan 1, 2026.

Why this matters for founders

Founders with employees across states must reconcile payroll to each state's new minimum wage and enroll in or fund new PFML programs to avoid penalties.
