Global Talent visa opened to 100+ UK firms to sponsor researchers (6 Aug 2026)

On 6 August 2026 the UK government expanded the Global Talent visa so that, for the first time, over 100 approved research-intensive businesses (not just universities) can support exceptional scientists and engineers to move to the UK. It covers the eight Modern Industrial Strategy sectors including AI, life sciences, clean energy and quantum, and sits alongside the £54m Global Talent Fund. More than 12,500 people from 130+ countries have used the route to date.

Why this matters for founders

A UK deep-tech or research-led startup that qualifies as an endorsed funder can now directly back overseas hires onto the Global Talent route, speeding senior technical recruitment; founders should check eligibility as an approved research business and map the endorsed funder pathway into their hiring plan.
