NZ launches Institute for Advanced Technology at Auckland's GridAKL

On 21 August 2026 the Government launched the New Zealand Institute for Advanced Technology (NZIAT), the country's fourth Public Research Organisation, based at GridAKL in Auckland. It focuses on AI, quantum technologies and advanced materials, has already committed $71 million over seven years to a magnetic and materials platform, and is mandated to strengthen connections between researchers, industry and investors.

Why this matters for founders

Deep-tech and AI founders now have a national R&D partner co-located with startups and investors at GridAKL; approach NZIAT for research collaboration, commercialisation support and investor introductions.
