UK Start Up Loans now cover businesses trading up to 5 years; rate rises to 7.5%

From 6 April 2026 the government-backed Start Up Loans programme (delivered via the British Business Bank) extended eligibility to businesses trading for up to 5 years (60 months), up from the previous 3-year (36-month) cutoff, while raising the fixed interest rate from 6% to 7.5%. Loans run up to £25,000 per person, and the Bank is targeting at least 85,000 loans over the next five years.

Why this matters for founders

A UK founder up to five years into trading who was previously past the old 3-year limit can now apply for an unsecured personal Start Up Loan of up to £25,000 at 7.5% fixed, plus free business mentoring.
