British Business Bank plans new £150m Northern scale-up fund for high-growth firms

On 7 September 2026 the British Business Bank revealed plans to commit up to £150m to a new fund backing high-growth scale-up businesses across the North of England, including university spin-outs and innovative companies in cities such as Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield and Newcastle. It is aimed at closing the regional equity gap by providing larger-scale growth capital; an operational launch date has not yet been confirmed.

Why this matters for founders

Founders scaling a high-growth or spin-out business in Northern England should register interest with the British Business Bank and line up their growth-stage equity story so they are ready when the fund opens to applications.
