From July 1, 2026, Skatteverket can deny or revoke a company's VAT registration where there is a risk of tax evasion, require in-person identity verification for some VAT applications, mark a VAT number as invalid in the EU's VIES exchange system, and pause excess input-VAT refunds when the underlying documentation looks unreliable. The changes stem from proposition 2025/26:128 and aim to curb cross-border VAT fraud.
New Swedish anti-VAT-fraud rules from July 1, 2026: registration can be denied or voided
New founders registering for VAT should file accurate, complete applications and be ready to verify identity in person, since sloppy or high-risk registrations can now be refused or revoked. Founders trading cross-border in the EU should confirm their VAT number stays valid in VIES to avoid blocked transactions.
