Effective July 1, 2026, Sweden's Tax Agency (Skatteverket) gained four new anti-fraud powers: it can require in-person identity checks during VAT registration, deny or cancel a VAT registration if something is wrong, mark VAT numbers invalid in the EU's VIES system, and temporarily pause VAT refunds when underlying documentation looks incorrect. The changes were enacted via prop. 2025/26:128 and codified in the Tax Administration Act (Skatteforfarandelagen, 7 kap. 10-12).

When registering a new company for VAT, founders should expect tighter scrutiny and possibly an in-person visit to a Skatteverket office to verify identity, so file complete, accurate registration details and keep clean documentation to avoid refund holds or a denied/revoked VAT number.
