From July 1, 2026, Sweden's Tax Agency (Skatteverket) gains expanded authority when a company registers for VAT (moms): it can require the owner to appear at a tax office to identify themselves in person, and can deny or revoke a VAT registration to counter fraud. The same package lifts the ban on remote audits, letting Skatteverket conduct inspections via telecommunications and copy records from accessible systems. Skatteverket published the changes on June 30, 2026.
From July 1, 2026 Skatteverket gains new powers over VAT registration
A founder registering a new Swedish AB for VAT should expect tighter scrutiny and be ready to identify in person and document a genuine business, since Skatteverket can now refuse or pull the registration. Prepare clean incorporation, ID, and business-activity evidence before applying to avoid delays.
