Sweden arms Skatteverket to deny or revoke VAT registration from July 1, 2026

Under Prop. 2025/26:128 (Atgarder mot mervardesskattebedragerier), rules in force since July 1, 2026 let Skatteverket run tighter checks at VAT registration, deny or deregister a company from VAT if there is a risk of tax evasion, and flag a VAT number as invalid in the EU VIES system. The government (proposal presented February 17, 2026) says the goal is to give the tax agency more tools to stop VAT fraud and the criminal economy.

Why this matters for founders

Founders registering a new company for VAT should have clean, documented business substance (address, activity, ownership) ready, since incomplete or suspicious applications can now be refused or revoked; verify partners' VAT numbers in VIES before cross-border invoicing.
