Tax reform: startups must fill CBS/IBS fields on e-invoices from Aug 3, 2026

Under Brazil's consumption tax reform transition, completing the new CBS and IBS fields on electronic invoices (NF-e, NFC-e and transport documents) became mandatory on August 3, 2026, with the service e-invoice (NFS-e) requirement following on October 1, 2026. Provisional 2026 test-year rates are 0.9% (CBS) and 0.1% (IBS), and Simples Nacional businesses got their compliance deadline extended to January 1, 2027. During 2026 contributors who follow the rules are exempt from actually collecting IBS/CBS, but an invoice that isn't authorized can halt operations.

Why this matters for founders

Founders should immediately confirm their invoicing/ERP provider has enabled the new CBS/IBS fields and test-issue a document now, since an unauthorized e-invoice can stop the business from selling even though no tax is actually owed in the 2026 test year.
