Brazil Pix rule IN BCB 766: 80-day MED dispute window, layered fraud tracing

Instrucao Normativa BCB no 766 (published in the DOU on 29 July 2026) upgrades Pix fraud handling in phases. From 10 August 2026 a layered tracking system (a new transaction-depth attribute) lets the Banco Central and banks trace funds across successive transfers to catch 'contas laranja'. From 1 September 2026 the deadline to contest a MED (Mecanismo Especial de Devolucao) refund transaction rises from 30 to 80 days.

Why this matters for founders

Any startup collecting Pix (e-commerce, marketplaces, fintechs, SaaS billing) now has a longer 80-day window to contest wrongful MED refund claw-backs and must expect tighter, traceable fraud flags; build the extended dispute timeline and layered-tracing reporting into payments and reconciliation.
