New BCB Pix antifraud rules phase in Aug 10 and Sep 1, 2026; MED window jumps to 80 days

Via Instrução Normativa BCB nº 766, the Banco Central rolls out Pix security changes in two phases: layered fund tracing plus new infraction-notification and value-recovery procedures from August 10, 2026, and from September 1, 2026 the contestation window for MED (Mecanismo Especial de Devolução) refunds expands from 30 to 80 days in fraud cases. The measures target backend fraud detection and recovery; there are no new fees for end users.

Why this matters for founders

Any founder taking Pix (marketplaces, fintechs, e-commerce) should update fraud-detection, refund and reconciliation flows now, since the 80-day MED contestation window materially extends how long a received Pix payment can be reversed. Confirm your payment processor supports the new layered-tracing and infraction-notification procedures before September 1.
