On 31 March 2026 the RBA's Payments System Board concluded that surcharging on eftpos, Mastercard and Visa debit, prepaid and credit cards will be removed from 1 October 2026, with domestic interchange fee caps lowered the same day; American Express will voluntarily drop surcharging from that date too. Foreign-card interchange caps and new payment-cost transparency rules follow on 1 April 2027.
Australia bans card-payment surcharges for all merchants from 1 October 2026
Any founder whose checkout takes card payments must stop adding a card surcharge by 1 October 2026 and reprice to absorb the (now-lower) processing fee. Update your payment provider settings and checkout UI before the deadline to stay compliant.
