Slack gets early-team conversation out of email and text threads into searchable, organized channels. The free plan is enough for a small team to start, and its huge integration library lets you pipe alerts from your other tools into one place. It's the default chat tool many contractors and partners already use.

Caveats
The free plan only shows the last 90 days of messages, so history you rely on disappears until you pay per user. For a very small co-located team it can be overkill, and constant notifications can become a distraction.
Bottom line
Pick it when a growing remote or distributed team needs organized, searchable chat with integrations.
