EU AI Act enforcement powers over general-purpose AI models now active

Since August 2, 2026, the European Commission's supervision and enforcement powers over general-purpose AI (GPAI) model providers under the EU AI Act are in force, backed by the AI Office. GPAI providers face transparency and copyright obligations; models placed on the market after Aug 2, 2025 had to comply by Aug 2, 2026, while pre-existing models have until Aug 2, 2027. The Commission can request information, run evaluations, and impose fines.

Why this matters for founders

US AI startups offering models or systems in the EU should confirm GPAI transparency and copyright documentation is in place, since the Commission can now demand it and levy penalties.
