On 14 July 2026, PM Anthony Albanese announced a new Office of AI inside the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet to coordinate 'Australian standards' for AI and end the government's prior 'issue-by-issue' approach. The framework targets data centres, copyright, workplace automation and defence, and is pitched to give investors 'greater clarity and speed for approvals and a streamlined process for verifying compliance.' The Attorney-General confirmed no text-and-data-mining copyright exemption is planned for AI firms.
