Texas Responsible AI Governance Act (TRAIGA) in effect Jan 1, 2026

TRAIGA (HB 149), effective January 1, 2026, amends the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act with AI-specific duties and prohibits AI systems used for behavioral manipulation, unlawful discrimination, or illegal deepfakes. The law also expands data-broker registration ($300/year with the Secretary of State) and carries penalties up to $7,500 per violation with a 30-day cure period.

Why this matters for founders

Startups deploying AI to Texas users should document that their systems aren't manipulative or discriminatory, and check whether they now qualify as a data broker that must register.
