Why this matters
Bank feeds are what make Xero low-maintenance: transactions flow in daily and you categorize instead of typing. Without feeds you're importing CSVs or hand-keying — slow, error-prone, and the main reason books fall months behind. This one connection is the difference between 15 minutes a week and a quarterly catch-up slog.
What "done" looks like
- Every business checking, savings, and credit card account has an active feed in Xero
- New transactions appear in the reconcile screen within about a business day
- The Xero balance and actual bank balance track each other closely
How to do it
- Open Accounting → Bank accounts → Add bank account.
- Search for your bank and follow the secure connection flow — in the US, many feeds run through Plaid.
- Select only business accounts — every card and account you actually transact on.
- Match each feed to the right account in your chart of accounts, with a correct starting balance.
- Verify after a few days that transactions are flowing and balances line up.
- Fall back to statement imports (CSV/OFX) only for banks with no feed.
Common mistakes
- Connecting the checking account but not the business credit card, so half your expenses never arrive
- Setting a wrong opening balance, which throws off reconciliation from day one
- Assuming feeds are infallible — they occasionally drop or duplicate transactions, which monthly reconciliation catches
Real-world examples
- Xero announced a Plaid partnership in 2025 to roughly triple its high-quality US bank feed connections and move feeds to more reliable OAuth-based direct connections.
- That network covers more than a thousand US institutions, including smaller banks and credit unions that previously lacked direct feeds.
From a founder's point of view
The feed is what turns bookkeeping from data entry into review. Once transactions show up on their own, keeping books current stops being a project and becomes a coffee-length habit.
Rule of thumb
If you ever type a transaction into Xero that your bank already knows about, a feed or import routine is missing — done means zero hand-keyed bank transactions.
