Washington employers must notify workers of I-9 audits from Oct 1, 2026

Under Washington's Immigrant Worker Protection Act, effective October 1, 2026, employers must promptly notify affected workers and their representatives when they receive a federal I-9 inspection notice and again after the outcome. State model notice templates are due by September 1, 2026; violations carry statutory penalties and attorney-fee recovery, enforceable by workers or the Attorney General.

Why this matters for founders

Washington startups with W-2 staff should add an I-9-audit notification step to their HR playbook before Oct 1 to avoid statutory penalties and lawsuits.
